Shiraz University's main library, known as the Mirza Library and located on top of the Eram Hill, is famous for its brutalist design.
The library and two other buildings nearby (which are currently in use as dorms) were designed by Minoru Yamasaki for the Pahlavi University as part of a large campus that would comprise 11 blocks around the hill, surrounding departments, plazas, a couple of stages and cinemas. The project was carried out from 1960 to 1979, though it remained unfinished.
Mirza Library is very well-stocked with the most recent publications in Persian. It also has one of the largest archives of newspapers and magazines published in modern Iranian history. The non-Persian collections are also big and include a number of donated private collections, including the library of the famous Persian writer, Sadegh Chubak, as well as the library of the American orientalist and scholar, Arthur Pope.
The library is open throughout the year and the collections are open to students and scholars registered at the University.
